Common image sizes in inches
The same pixels cover a very different physical size depending on DPI. Width × height in inches:
| Image | 96 dpi | 300 dpi |
|---|---|---|
| Full HD screen1,920 × 1,080 px | 20 × 11.25 in | 6.4 × 3.6 in |
| Square social post1,080 × 1,080 px | 11.25 × 11.25 in | 3.6 × 3.6 in |
| Camera photo (3:2)3,000 × 2,000 px | 31.25 × 20.83 in | 10 × 6.67 in |
| Phone photo (4:3)4,032 × 3,024 px | 42 × 31.5 in | 13.44 × 10.08 in |
| US Letter at 300 DPI2,550 × 3,300 px | 26.56 × 34.38 in | 8.5 × 11 in |
The formula
inches = pixels ÷ DPI
- 1,920 px ÷ 96 DPI = 20 in
- 2,550 px ÷ 300 DPI = 8.5 in
- 1,080 px ÷ 150 DPI = 7.2 in
A pixel has no fixed physical size. It becomes a length only once you decide how many pixels share an inch. The DPI vs PPI guide explains the difference and which value to use.
How big will my image print?
Enter the image's width and height in pixels, then set the DPI you want to print at. A 4,032 × 3,024 px phone photo prints at 13.44 × 10.08 inches at 300 DPI, or 26.88 × 20.16 inches at 150 DPI. Lowering the DPI makes the print larger but softer; the pixels themselves do not change.
Working backwards from a print size? See the pixel dimensions for 8.5 × 11 in (US Letter), 4 × 6 in (photo / postcard), 8 × 10 in (photo print), and 3.5 × 2 in (US business card).
Pixels to inches on screens
On the web, CSS defines 1 inch as 96 CSS pixels, so 96 DPI is the right setting for layout sizes. Phones and high-density displays use more than one physical pixel per CSS pixel, so a CSS inch on screen is not always a physical inch.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert pixels to inches?
Divide the pixels by the DPI (or PPI): inches = pixels ÷ DPI. For example, 1,920 px at 96 DPI is 20 inches, and 2,550 px at 300 DPI is 8.5 inches.
How many inches is 1920 x 1080 pixels?
At 96 DPI, 1,920 × 1,080 px is 20 × 11.25 inches. At 300 DPI the same image prints at 6.4 × 3.6 inches.
How many inches is 1 pixel?
It depends on the DPI. At 96 DPI one pixel is 1/96 inch (about 0.0104 in); at 300 DPI it is 1/300 inch (about 0.0033 in).
Does changing DPI change the number of pixels?
No. DPI only changes how large the same pixels print. A 3,000 px wide image is 10 inches wide at 300 DPI and 20 inches wide at 150 DPI; the pixel count stays 3,000.
Is anything I type sent to a server?
No. Every calculation runs in your browser.
