8x10 inches to pixels
An 8 × 10 inch print is 2,400 × 3,000 pixels at 300 DPI, about 7.2 megapixels.
8 × 10 in (photo print) in pixels at common DPI values
Pixels = inches × DPI. 8 × 10 inches at each setting:
| DPI | Width × height (px) |
|---|---|
| 72 dpi | 576 × 720 |
| 96 dpi | 768 × 960 |
| 150 dpi | 1,200 × 1,500 |
| 300 dpi | 2,400 × 3,000 |
| 600 dpi | 4,800 × 6,000 |
Pixel size for an 8x10 print
At 300 DPI an 8 × 10 in print needs 2,400 × 3,000 px. At 150 DPI it needs 1,200 × 1,500 px, which holds up if the print will be framed and viewed from a little distance. At 96 DPI, 768 × 960 px is a screen size, not a print size.
Because 7.2 megapixels is a modest amount by today's standards, most photos from recent phones and cameras clear this bar. Older photos, cropped images and images saved from the web are more likely to fall short.
The 4:5 ratio and cropping
An 8 × 10 print has a 4:5 aspect ratio, which is squarer than the 3:2 shape of most camera sensors. A 6,000 × 4,000 px photo held in portrait orientation maps its 4,000 px short side to 8 inches (500 pixels per inch) but needs only 5,000 of its 6,000 px on the long side, so about 1,000 px is cropped away.
Decide where that crop falls before you order, particularly for portraits, so a head or hands are not trimmed at the edge of the frame.
Checking whether your image is big enough
Divide your image's pixel width by the print width in inches. A 2,000 px wide image at 8 inches is 250 pixels per inch: a little under the 300 target, usually still fine to print, but not ideal. Below roughly 150 pixels per inch, softness is more likely to be noticeable. Upscaling in software enlarges the file without adding detail.

Frequently asked questions
How many pixels is 8x10 inches?
At 300 DPI, 8 × 10 inches is 2,400 × 3,000 pixels. At 150 DPI it is 1,200 × 1,500, and at 600 DPI it is 4,800 × 6,000.
How many megapixels do I need for an 8x10 print?
About 7.2 megapixels (2,400 × 3,000 px) gives a full 300 pixels per inch. A 3-megapixel image can still print acceptably at 8 × 10 but will be softer.
Why is my 8x10 print cropped?
8 × 10 is a 4:5 ratio, while most cameras capture 3:2 and many phones 4:3. Fitting the photo to 4:5 trims some of the longer side.
